Core Patterns
Two Sentence Skeletons
Every English sentence is built on one of two patterns
Pattern A — Action Verb 动作动词
N + V + (N)
Birds fly.
Humans invented writing.
She gave him a book.
Pattern B — Linking Verb 系动词
N + Vlink + Adj / N
The sky is blue.
She became a teacher.
This looks amazing.

The Golden Rule
Every modifier has one of two jobs
形容词性 Adj-type → decorates NOUN
Answers: Which one? What kind?
ancient humans — word
messages carved on stone — non-finite phrase
a tool for writing — prep phrase
the language that we speak — clause
副词性 Adv-type → decorates VERB (or Adj/Adv)
Answers: How? When? Where? Why?

Modifier Levels
Three Levels of Modification
从大到小:句子 → 短语 → 单词
Level 1 · Clause 从句 — agent (引导词) + 完整句子
Adj: the book that changed the world
that/which/who → 形容词性从句
Adv: they celebrated because they won
because/when/if → 副词性从句
Level 2 · Phrase 短语 — 介词短语 & 非谓语短语
in the morning / with a pen

Clause = Agent + Sentence
